Jan Lego (1833–1906) was a Czech and a pioneer of
Czech-Slovenian solidarity. He was an amateur researcher of the Slovenian
musical past, participated in the development of musical production in
Slovenian lands and was one of the co-founders of the organisational forms of
Slovenian musical life. He founded a singing society in Trieste. He was also
responsible for the establishment of the Slavic National Reading Room in
Trieste. He initiated the marking of Slovenian mountain trails, took part in
the founding of the Slovenian and Czech Alpine Clubs and encouraged Czechs to
visit our mountains.
The sculpture collection of the National Gallery
contains a plaster design of a tombstone to Jan Lego from the Olšanské hřbitovy
cemetery in Prague, made by the sculptor Svetoslav Peruzzi. The work was
previously wrongly attributed to the sculptor Ivan Zajec.
