The motif of the painting is the biblical scene of the newborn Moses whom his mother has put into a basket and drifted it along the river where subsequently pharaoh’s daughter, walking on the bank with her maid-servants, finds him.
The attribution of the painting to Januarius Zick, which has been established through the comparison of style, has been corroborated by a reminder of the signature on a scrap of canvas that is pasted on the back of the frame: J. Zick Iunior / inv. et pinx. 17.. It is possible that the painting was originally larger and was subsequently cropped, leaving intact only the main group. The style of the painting demonstrates the artist’s mature period, showing French and Italian influences that are interpreted in distinctively Rococo spirit.
