As the central national institution for the study of art heritage, the National Gallery of Slovenia has its specialist library. Its main task is to keep an up-to-date stock of library books with publications that deal with the artistic heritage of the Slovene ethnic territory and the Central European cultural space. Its purchasing policy is focused on the scientific disciplines such as art history, museology, conservation and restoration as well as museum education.
The library holdings include almost 45,000 inventory units, offerings professional support to the basic activities of the National Gallery of Slovenia. The exchange of publications with a number of museums at home and abroad represents a large proportion of the annual acquisition.
The library also includes a hemeroteque, conceived at the time the Gallery was founded. This is where clippings from newspapers, television and radio transcriptions and online news items are all kept. In terms of content, these relate to the activities of the National Gallery of Slovenia, art from the past and architectural heritage on Slovene soil, as well as cultural policies that are in one way or another linked to the work of museums, art galleries and the protection of artistic heritage.
The library of the National Gallery of Slovenia is open to the public and is intended as an information centre for professionals as well as art-lovers. Library material is available to outside users in the Reading Room of the National Gallery of Slovenia during specified hours as published. Material can not be borrowed to take home, but it can be photocopied in accordance with the Law on Copyright and Related Rights. A PC and free WiFi network are available to users.
The library holdings of the National Gallery of Slovenia have not yet been fully computer catalogued. Material acquired between 1998 and 2002 has been catalogued in the Infolit programme, however, since 2003 the library is an active user of the COBISS shared cataloguing system. There is also a link available to search the online library collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia (Infolit and COBISS). A librarian is always at hand to help with any queries.
