In
cooperation with the Faculty of Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of
the University of Ljubljana, as well as the Restoration Centre of the Institute
for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, we are preparing an
exhibition of medieval frescoes to mark the 90th and 100th anniversaries of the
first conservation-restoration interventions on the wall paintings in Crngrob
and Vrzdenec. For the first time, all the discovered detached fragments – now
held by the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Faculty of Arts of the University
of Ljubljana, and the Restoration Centre – will be presented together.
The
exhibited fresco fragments will be complemented by extensive documentary
material, including historical photographs and drawings from the INDOK Centre
of the Ministry of Culture. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue
featuring art-historical and conservation-restoration studies dedicated to the
paintings of Master Bolfgangus in the Church of the Annunciation in Crngrob and
in the nave of the Church of St Cancian in Vrzdenec near Horjul. The exhibition
and catalogue will shed light on the technology of medieval mural painting, on
how to understand heavily fragmented paintings removed from their original
context, and on the challenges involved in their preservation.
