The exhibition will present a substantial donation of
works by the painter, caricaturist, illustrator, educator, and restorer France
Podrekar, which has been received by the National Gallery of Slovenia. The
exhibition will be complemented by Podrekar’s works from the collections of
other institutions and private collectors.
Podrekar created political satires and caricatures for the newspapers Danand Jutro alongside Maksim Gaspari, and for the newspaper Kurenttogether with Hinko Smrekar and Fran Tratnik. Throughout his career, he also
illustrated children’s magazines Vrtec and Zvonček.
After 1922, he devoted himself exclusively to book illustration, beginning withVolk Spokornik (The Repentant Wolf) by Fran Ksaver Meško.
He is best known to the wider public for his illustrations for Josip Ribičič’s
fairy tale Miškolin (Miškolin, the Mouse) and for Fran
Milčinski’s books Skavt Peter (Peter the Scout), Zlata hruška (The
Golden Pear Tree), and Butalci (The People of Butale).
